Celebrity Baseball Spotlight Series: Scott Patterson

As part of our recurring celebrity spotlight series we now focus on actor Scott Patterson. Prior to his acting career, Patterson played seven years of minor league ball from 1980-1986.  Originally drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1980, he was then traded by the Braves to the New York Yankees for Bob Watson in 1982.  It is interesting that Patterson was traded for Watson who in addition to having a noteworthy major league career also was credited with scoring the one millionth run in major league history.  That in itself is an interesting story and we encourage you to click on this link to learn more about that notable event in baseball history.

Getting back to Patterson, he then bounced between double and triple A for his five years in the Yankees system and even reached all-star status in 1986, but never reached the major leagues.  Overall, out of the seven years in the minors, mostly split between double A and triple A levels, Patterson compiled a record of 56-40 along with 20 saves in just over 800 innings.

After his baseball career ended, Patterson has distinguished himself as an actor in Hollywood. Most notably, he played the character Luke Danes, who was the owner of the diner in the town of Stars Hollow and the on-again, off-again love interest of Lorelai Gilmore in the hit series Gilmore Girls that lasted seven seasons.

After conclusion of that series Patterson then portrayed Special Agent Peter Strahm in the “Saw” horror movies, specifically in “Saw IV” and “Saw V.”

Today, Scott Patterson plays the character Harry “Sully” Sullivan in “Sullivan’s Crossing” with his character running a remote campground while dealing with a strained relationship with his estranged daughter, Maggie.

Finally, for us here at BP one of our favorite, albeit small parts we remember Patterson in was his memorable role on Seinfeld, where he makes the case to Elaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) that he is “sponge worthy”.  If you have not seen that show, we suggest that you check it out, and here is a brief clip of Patterson in that episode.
