Celebrity Baseball Spotlight Series

Here at BP we wondered if there were celebrities out there that also played baseball.  For purposes of our list, we are not going to consider athletes who played other sports, which would exclude such famous individuals as Deion Sanders, Bo Jackson, Danny Ainge, Shaq Thompson, etc. who all played multiple sports in their career.  Instead we will consider a celebrity as someone outside the sports’ world who ended up playing either major or minor league baseball during their lifetime.  We will start out our celebrity series with Bert Convy.

Bert Convy was probably best known as a game show host.  Over his career he hosted iconic game shows such as To_Tell_the_Truth, TattleTales, Super Password and Win,_Lose_or_Draw.  In addition, Bert Convy was an actor and appeared in almost 80 television shows and movies, throughout his noteworthy career.

Prior to making his name in Hollywood, Bert was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies at only 17 to play ball in their minor league system. In total though, Bert only lasted two years playing for three teams in the Phillies minor league system from 1951 – 1952.  Those minor league teams included stops with the Klamath Falls (Oregon) Gems in the Far West League (Class D), the Salt Lake City (Utah) Bees of the Pioneer League, and the Miami (Oklahoma) Eagles of the Kansas-Oklahoma-Missouri League (Class D).  Bert did not though distinguish himself on the diamond like he did on screen as noted below per Baseball Reference.

Sadly, Bert Convy passed away at the relatively young age of 57 due to a brain tumor in 1991.
